After graduating high school, he served in the United States Army for two years. On September 19, 1953 he married his love, Doris L. Irvin. After completing his military service he was employed by a funeral home in Wytheville where he developed an interest in mortuary science. He completed an apprenticeship through the funeral home before beginning academic studies at the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He completed his degree and relocated to Charlottesville.
In 1964 the family moved to Greene County where Frank and Doris established the Ryan Funeral Home. In addition to the funeral home they also offered ambulance service to the community until the Greene County Rescue Squad was fully operational. For the next several years Frank served as a daytime member and fulltime dispatcher for the rescue squad.
Frank took great pride in the family of Greene County but also his own family. He was married for 41 years to Doris I. Ryan and together they raised their three daughters, Sharon, Angela and Sarita.
In 1995 Frank Ryan passed away at the University of Virginia Medical Center. His wife, Doris took over the day to day operations of the business until retiring in 2006. Now their daughter, Sarita Ryan Powers has the same passion for the funeral home as her parents once had.
In 2010 the funeral home hired Ashleigh Norris Coffey as the Funeral Director and Manager. Sarita and Ashleigh along with their dedicated staff are continuing the Ryan family tradition of dedication and service to the Greene and surrounding county families by combining traditional trends with the ever-changing funeral industry.
